From draft to done: agentic Copilot in Excel, Word, and PowerPoint | Microsoft Community Hub
What changes when Copilot stops suggesting and starts doing? This blog post covers how Microsoft 365 Copilot is becoming more agentic in Excel, Word, and PowerPoint, taking multi-step actions to create, edit, and refine files in place. Read the blog post to see what agentic Copilot means for your nonprofit's daily work.
What does “agentic Copilot” mean in Excel, Word, and PowerPoint?
When Microsoft describes Copilot as agentic in Excel, Word, and PowerPoint, it means Copilot can now take multi-step, in-app actions directly inside your files instead of just giving you suggestions to copy and paste.
In practice, that looks like this:
- Works where you already work: Copilot edits directly in your Excel workbooks, Word docs, and PowerPoint decks using native tables, formulas, charts, styles, and layouts.
- Multi-step workflows, not one-off prompts: You can ask Copilot to build a financial model, refresh a recurring report, or tighten a slide’s story, and it will perform a series of coordinated edits to get there.
- Grounded in your current work: With Work IQ, Copilot stays aligned to what’s current across your files, meetings, chats, and relationships, so it can pull in the latest decisions, dates, and details.
- Transparent and reversible: Changes are applied in the file in a way that’s reviewable and reversible, so you can see what changed, adjust assumptions, and roll back if needed.
- One shared version: Because everyone works in the same file, teams can coauthor and refine a single version instead of emailing multiple copies around.
- Built-in security and compliance: Copilot honors your existing Microsoft 365 permissions and sensitivity labels, so it only uses and exposes content people are allowed to see.
- Model choice without tool switching: You can choose between OpenAI and Anthropic models (with options like GPT-5.4 and Claude Opus 4.6 rolling out) directly inside the apps, matching the model to the task.
Overall, “agentic” Copilot is about helping you move work from in-progress to ready to share—whether that’s a trusted Excel model, a review-ready Word document, or an on-brand PowerPoint deck—without leaving the tools you already use.
How can Copilot help me build and maintain Excel models?
Copilot in Excel is designed to help you build, refine, and maintain working models directly in your workbook, not just give you a single answer.
Here are some concrete ways it supports real analytical work:
- Build models from scratch: You can ask Copilot to create a P&L forecast using the latest data in a file like Operating Model.xlsx, build it out for 12 months starting January 2026, and include growth, retention, and unit economics with adjustable assumptions.
- Refresh recurring analyses: Copilot can replicate last week’s sales analysis in a new sheet using the latest numbers (for example, from a Sales Weekly Update.docx) and highlight top performance insights, including customer churn trends and areas of concern, with visualizations.
- Advanced valuation scenarios: You can have Copilot build a discounted cash flow (DCF) model by pulling a company’s latest disclosures from the web and applying specific assumptions, such as:
- Free cash flow growth: 12% annually for 5 years
- Discount rate: 9% with sensitivity from 8% to 10%
- Terminal growth: 2% with sensitivity from 1% to 3%
- Native, editable outputs: Copilot writes native tables, formulas, and charts into the grid so you can audit formulas, tweak inputs, and iterate as your assumptions change.
- Flexible data access: The experience supports locally stored workbooks, file uploads, and file search, with Work IQ grounding rolling out to keep models aligned with your latest context.
- Model choice for different tasks: You can choose OpenAI or Anthropic models for in-app editing, with additional options like GPT-5.4 and Claude Opus 4.6 rolling out in the coming weeks.
Availability: Copilot’s agentic experience in Excel is generally available today on Windows, web, and Mac for Microsoft 365 Copilot users.
How does Copilot improve collaboration in Word and PowerPoint?
Copilot in Word and PowerPoint is built to help teams co-create in one shared file, keep content aligned with current context, and stay on brand without extra manual work.
In Word: from draft to review-ready
Copilot works directly in the same document your team is editing, so you avoid multiple versions and manual reconciliation. It can:
- Create structured briefs: Generate a project status decision brief for a given project using information from your recent meetings, files, and emails over a chosen timeframe. It can include sections like:
- Executive Summary
- Current status
- Key decisions and progress
- Next steps
- Unresolved issues or risks
- Recommendations
- Refresh recurring reports: Update a monthly executive report by pulling the latest information from recent team emails and Teams chats, replacing last month’s updates while only editing specific parts (for example, the last 3 columns of a table).
- Status and formatting rules: Copilot can apply status icons (green on track, yellow at risk, red off track), explain off-track items in a “latest developments” column, and apply all new text in blue font so changes are easy to spot.
- Formatting and clarity pass: It can clean up heading hierarchy, spacing, fonts, lists, and tables; reorganize long sections with subheadings or tables; align tone and formatting with your recent proposals; and sanity check high-level market or competitor claims using readily available information.
Availability: This editing experience is generally available today in Word on Windows, web, and Mac for Microsoft 365 Copilot users. Model choice with OpenAI and Anthropic models is planned for April.
In PowerPoint: clear, visual, and on brand
In PowerPoint, Copilot focuses on helping you keep decks crisp and brand-consistent while collaborating in a single shared presentation:
- Respecting brand and templates: Copilot uses your organization’s approved templates, themes, colors, layouts, object styles, and images so slides stay on brand without manual policing.
- Sharpening existing decks: You can use Copilot to clarify a slide’s main message, simplify dense bullet lists, and turn text into timelines, diagrams, or charts—all within the existing deck.
- Creating executive presentations: Ask Copilot to build an executive presentation on market pressures and trends in a specific industry, including a high-level competitive analysis of leading players and a conclusion on implications for industry leaders.
- Transforming text into visuals: For example, you can say, “Transform text on this slide into a chart,” and Copilot will convert it into a visual that fits your brand.
- Brand checks: Copilot can run a brand consistency check against your established brand kit and guidelines.
Availability: Copilot’s PowerPoint editing experience is rolling out to the web for Microsoft 365 Copilot users now and will become available on Windows and Mac in the coming months.
Together, these capabilities help teams move from scattered drafts and off-brand slides to review-ready documents and consistent presentations, all while working in a single, shared version of each file.
